Hourly Rates:

Lifeguard 1: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
Lifeguard 2: $21.00 - $23.00 per hour
Lifeguard 3: $24.00 - $26.00 per hour

*Placement and rate of pay, is dependent on years of experience and qualifications.

ADDITIONAL PAY:

  • Placed at Gene Coulon Beach Park = +$1.00/hr
  • LGI or EMT Certification = +$1.00/hr
  • Swim Lesson Instructor = +$1.00/hr
  • Swim Lesson Instructor with WSI = +$2.00/hr


HOURS: Varies up to 40 hours per week

SUPERVISION:
Reports To: Recreation Program Coordinator and/or Recreation Supervisor
Supervises: none

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Position oneself strategically for optimal visibility and quick response to any incidents.
  • Remain at assigned post without exception, except in the case of relief or emergency situations.
  • Coordinate with fellow guards when leaving post for rescue or addressing patron issues.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding and enforcement of pool/beach rules and regulations.
  • Remove lifeguard identification during lunch or relief breaks as necessary.
  • Fulfill all required in-service training unless excused.
  • Conduct restroom checks during break rotations whenever feasible.
  • Provide water safety instruction; we will be offering swim lessons for 6mo - adult. Additional pay available for teaching swim lessons.
  • Employ interpersonal skills with tact, patience, and courtesy in all interactions.
  • Cultivate professional and respectful relationships with patrons and team members alike.
  • Foster teamwork by collaborating effectively with colleagues.
  • Arrive promptly at assigned post and commence duties at scheduled start time.
  • Adhere strictly to break times and promptly return to assigned post/guard position as directed.
  • Ensure all assigned equipment is maintained in optimal working condition.
  • Follow instructions accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain consistent, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Flexibly accommodate evening and weekend shifts as required.
  • Perform any additional duties as delegated by supervisory staff.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Lifeguard 1:

  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Successfully complete a required City swim test.
  • Successfully pass a required background check.

Lifeguard 2:

  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a Lifeguard 1
  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Successfully complete a required City swim test.
  • Successfully pass a required background check.
  • Lifeguard 2's are generally considered our Leads.

Lifeguard 3:

  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a Lifeguard 2
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successfully complete a required City swim test.
  • Successfully pass a required background check.
  • Lifeguard 3 roles may include leading the following:
    • Swim lesson, in service, and programs/events coordination, scheduling, and Gene Coulon Beach.

Applicants must currently have the following, or successfully pass training provided by the City of Renton prior to employment:

  • Lifeguard Training Certification
  • Red Cross Certification
  • CPR and First Aid


COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of assigned recreation programs, activities, and services.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety guidelines and practices.
  • Ability to handle conflict and solve problems using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Ability to navigate emergency situations.
  • Work with diverse groups of people in a tactful, effective, and respectful manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, the community and program participants.
  • Follow instructions, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to safely perform job tasks in a variety of park and non-park settings.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds on occasion.
  • Move throughout City facilities and buildings,
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Communicate with City employees and residents.
  • Assist with lifting adults or children as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Noise level is moderately loud.
