Job/Internship Description
OverviewResearch Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers, who pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment. As part of our interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, designers, and physicians, we invite you to join us in an environment where academic research, enterprise software development, and real-world delivery converge. This unique setting allows for rapid iterations and close feedback loops among all areas, fostering an atmosphere of continuous learning and growth. Project Focus:The selected Research Intern will collaborate with our team on a project centered around the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) and related technologies to analyze extensive research data in some scientific field. The project's primary goal is to uncover the 'known-unknowns' of this field, aiding scientific breakthroughs by synthesizing up-to-date knowledge, formulating meaningful questions, and helping researchers to develop novel hypotheses. LLMs offer a unique advantage in analyzing and understanding human-written language. We aim to use this capability to construct a comprehensive worldview of a given scientific field. This includes understanding current breakthroughs and their links to prior inventions or literature and forming insights on potential future innovations. By building a distinctive perspective of both historical and prospective pathways, we aim to assist researchers globally to focus on significant advancements in their expertise areas. Our vision is that every researcher will eventually work with a personalized AI assistant, acting as a partner in scientific discovery, always keeping them informed and enhancing their research. Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
ResponsibilitiesResearch Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world's best researchers, Research Interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer. As a Research Intern, working across a multi-disciplinary team you will have the opportunity to shape the direction of your research project based on the areas that excite you most. The list below is illustrative of the many opportunities for impact you could be a part of.Utilizing LLMs to analyze vast amounts of scientific researchDevising techniques to identify gaps in current scientific knowledgeLeveraging literature to propose new hypothesis/techniques for addressing current gapsCreating personalized knowledge dashboards to help researchers stay updated in their fields, enabling efficient navigation through extensive research data.Build a personalized research copilot that helps researchers worldwide accelerate their productivity and findingsDesign an approach to augment experimentation capabilities by helping researchers rule out ideas quickly using scientific knowledgeCollaborate and partner with other teams working across Microsoft to explore different approaches to the scientific discovery problem (E.g., Material Sciences, Chemistry, Health Futures etc.)
