OverviewResearch Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers, who pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.The Visualization and Interactive Data Analysis (VIDA) team conducts fundamental research that innovates around data and human-computer interaction (HCI). We focus on exploring and building systems for analyzing, understanding and communicating about data. We explore these topics with an inquisitive, curiosity-driven mindset that values diverse and inclusive perspectives, and that respects the many ways-of-knowing that characterize a multi-disciplinary field like HCI. Topics of interest for Research Internships this year include (but are certainly not limited to):Interactive and live data notebooks.Use of foundational models to assist in interacting with data.Visualization recommendation systems.Decision making support and justification.Storytelling with data.Multi-modal interaction with data including natural language processing, gesture and touch.Accessibility for data visualization.Explainable artificial intelligence (AI) systems.Benchmarks for data science.Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. ResponsibilitiesResearch Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world's best researchers, Research Interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.
